Skills Canada NWT is a non-profit dedicated to promoting careers in skilled trades and technology to northern youth. We do this by organizing programs and events each year for youth throughout the NWT.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Sept. 18, 2008
Skills Canada NWT is looking for volunteers to get involved with events and programs that give youth a chance to learn about skilled trades and technology.
Skills Canada NWT is a registered charity whose mission is to promote careers in skilled trades and technology for youth. We do this through a number of exciting programs such as Skills Clubs, Youth Conferences, Territorial Skills Competitions, and more.
We are looking for volunteers in the following areas:
1. Skills Clubs Coaches: People with experience in skilled trades and technology are needed to coach youth for about two hours per week, exposing them to new challenges and preparing interested youth for the Territorial Skills Competition. Skills Clubs give youth around the NWT valuable opportunities to try a skilled trades or technology field without much cost or long-term commitment. People with formal training (such as journeypersons) are preferred, but anyone with a love of their trade or technology and an ability to teach it safely is welcome.
Skills Canada NWT provides financial and administrative support for our Skills Clubs.
2. Youth Conference Mentors: In Yellowknife in December 2008, Skills Canada NWT will host Power Up! Youth Conferences for young women (Dec. 8) and young men (Dec. 10) in Grade 8. At these conferences, we offer youth hands-on workshops in various occupations, especially those related to skilled trades and technology. We are looking for individuals and workplaces that are willing to host 90 minute workshops for small groups of youth on these days.
We are also looking for workshop hosts in Norman Wells for our first Sahtu Power Up! Youth Conference (date to be determined, probably the first week in February). Sponsors will also be needed.
3. Technical Chairs and Judges: On April 21, Skills Canada NWT will be hosting its 11th annual Territorial Skills Competition in Yellowknife. We are hoping to include several contests that were not offered last year, including: Housing Maintainer, Cabinet Making, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Website Design, Partsperson, and Power Line Electrician. Some of these contests have never been held at our Territorial Skills Competition. We will need Technical Chairs to coordinate these contests and Judges to evaluate the competitors and support the Technical Chair. If you are a qualified expert in any of these fields and you want to see more youth considering these careers, please consider getting involved. Journeypersons/experts from throughout the NWT are welcome; travel assistance will be provided for getting to the Territorial Skills Competition. We will also need sponsorship for these new contests and judges for some of our existing trades and technology contests.
In Inuvik, we will need Technical Chairs and Judges for the first ever Beaufort Delta Regional Skills Competition (date to be determined, probably mid to late March).
Contact our office for more information about any of these opportunities or other ways in which you can support our organization and its mission of promoting careers in skilled trades and technology for northern youth.
For our youth and our future,
Jan Fullerton
