Executive Director's Message

When people ask me about Skills Canada, I have to try not to overload them with information because I am so excited about everything that we’re doing and that we hope to do in the future and I want to share this excitement with everyone.

Just think – when we started in 1998-99, most of our energy was focused on the Territorial and Canadian Skills Competitions. Now we have those events plus two annual youth conferences, extracurricular Skills Clubs throughout the NWT, school presentations and career fairs, regional skills competitions, and partnerships with a number of companies, organizations and government agencies. Wow!!

Of course, there is so much more that we can do. There are many communities that don’t have ongoing programs. There are many youth that don’t know about career options in skilled trades and technology. There are community groups with whom we could be partnering to reach more people in the NWT. The possibilities are almost endless!

As we move forward, we want to help our communities but we also want our communities to help us. We want everyone to be a part of building our future workforce, supporting and empowering northern youth, and helping to build a strong and healthy north. For this, we need support from industry, government, volunteers, educators, parents and youth themselves.

Please explore our website to find out more about what we’ve done, what we’re doing now, new programs we’re hoping to start, and how you can get involved. We want to work with you and we want to work for you.

Be part of the Skills Revolution!

Jan
